I need a diet for Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease. Diagnosed 10/16/09. Good health otherwise. In April for my annual physical I had a Blood Test that showed low blood Hemaglobin. Family doctor sent me to a Hematologist. She prescribed Iron and sent me to a Urologist where I was diagnosed with 3rd stage Chronic Kidney disease which he said was caused by uncontrolled High Blood Pressure. I have taken Benicar HCT for about 3 years. He prescribed a Calcium Channel Blocker, 50,000 IU Vitamin D once a month and Lavaguin 250 MG (for infection). The Anemia is evidently caused by the CKD. I am an active 80 yr old female, retired, with excellent health until now.

Hi, unfortunately Good Housekeeping cannot provide medical advice, however we do suggest you seek the advice of a registered dietitian who speciallizes in kidney diseases. A registered dietitian (RD) is a qualified health professional who has completed a prescribed course of study including a minimum of a bachelor's degree (many also have master's degrees) and supervised practice work, and has passed a qualifying examination. Some RDs specialize in practice areas, like kidney disease or diabetes, and as such, can be a vtal part of your healthcare team. To find an RD, ask your doctor for a referral or visit the American Dietetic Association's website at www.eatright.org. To learn more about registered dietitians and nutritionists, read this Q&A on our website.

You most definitely need to speak to your doctor about suggesting a good nutritionist that can educate you on which foods you should and should not eat. He is the most familiar with your health needs and for me to advice you without that knowledge would be irresponsible. I'm sure that he would be happy to point you in the right direction. You might ask him to set the appointment for you. I'm sure his receptionist/nurse won't mind one bit. :)

Your nephrologist should recommend a dietician/nutritionalis t for you. They should have a list of "good" things to eat and "bad" things to avoid. They normally provide diet counselling at a follow up appt or at time of diagnosis. Definitely seek trained advice. Diet and exercise are the two best ways to keep your CKD in check. (Chronic Kidney Disease) My Dad had ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease) and was on Dialysis. Stick to the diet. It may not be exactly what you like and you may miss not being able to eat certain foods (tomato based products and peanut butter were "bad" and off limits to my Dad) but in the end, it is worth it. It is manageable with diet. My Dad, once diagnosed with CKD, was able to avoid dialysis for 2 years. Thanks to following a regimented diet and not cheating! (Well, knowing my Dad - I am sure he would sneak a "treat" every now and then!!)
