What would YOU say to a person who says "God wants you to do this"?My mom has this annoying friend. Everytime she wants someone to do something, she says it's God's idea...that he told her it. She uses phrases like "God told me he wants you to help me with the daycare", "God told me he wants you to work with the puppets in church". Once my mom told her she doesnt understand why God lies to her all the time because he told her something completely different ;) - Asked by dragonflyfairie, A Hippie Chick, Female, 26-28, Other Profession |

Tell her friend....God won't help those who won't help themself first......and to be honest...God doesn't like ugly. She needs to look again inside her heart and quit lieing to herself.

Ummm, your Mom is awesome!! I had someone try to do that with me once. An ex who found religion after we broke up wanted me to do her a favor and I said no. She actually had the nerve to say, "God's gonna get you for that."

I'd say "Oh yeah?! Well do you have God's number or e-mail address. I have a few things I'd like to ask Him myself." Then when she scowls at me I'd tell her "Sorry , the devil made me say that."

Your mom's friend is either a psychotic or a prophet. There's no middle ground on this. Either God Himself is talking to her or she's a schizophrenic. I can't tell you which, but I bet you have a fairly good idea.

The few times that I was told this by a very religious friend, I did try to do as she told me and that only lasted until I realized that a lot of the things she asked couldn't have been the 'word' of God because too many times it ended up that it was for her own 'good' and not for the good of others...she finally quit using God as a way to 'coerce' me into doing things when I told her, "If God wanted me to do these things, wouldn't He contact me in the same way He contacts you?"...she never had an answer for me and never asked me again...:D

A friend of my mom used to do this all the time but she was so sincere with everything and so I loved her all the more for it. She didn't come off as trying to have her way or make you feel guilty she said it as cooly as 'how about them yankees?' or 'gee, its nice weather we're having.' In any case, I had nothing to say.

I've met people who have made use of this practice - I've come to the conclusion that they were either mentally unbalanced or highly manipulative, thinking that they could get people to do their bidding because GOD told them that they were to do it. My former pastor used to say when someone would come to give him a "word from God" that sounded a bit suspicious, "thank you, I'll check it out".

I would ask them, "How stupid do you think I am?? Am I actually suppposed to fall for that?" It's insulting, not to mention blasphemous to bring God into it! This woman really has something wrong with her, to try to manipulate someone like that using God's name!

perhaps it is a method of mind control-like for example if someone says (God) told me to (rob a bank) or something-who is going to argue with that-except the police, who would then cart the poor soul off to jail...even if it was true-so, I would not give too much to anything--> except if some one said (God) told me to give you a MILLION dollars and handed it to you in like unmarked 20.00's-you would have to thank (God) of course-
