To me this would not be a difficult choice, to choose my child over the army.I not sure we can have single parents that dont have any child care facilities in place in our military. When you sign up you need to be prepared to go to war, and you really cant be taking a child in your back pack. I'm not being hard hearted, and I have been an advocate on this site for single parents in the civilian world. What do you guys think?

Some people treat the military as their new parents. And those who lacked strong real parents,or perhaps had none, don't understand the connection between action and consequence.

I don't mean this as a condemnation, merely an opinion...but if one would choose their child over the army, then one shouldn't BE in the army. When you swear to put your country's safety above everything else, then that's what you need to do - you need to put the safety of ALL your country's children above just your OWN child. That's exactly why serving in the military is such a sacrifice - you give of yourself - even to giving your own life - for The Greater Good of your country.

Our military personnel here in the US also pay taxes. It really surprises me that so many people think it is OK to make all these exceptions to the military. You sign a contract and are obligated to commit to it. If your personal situation changes, make do the best you can. If you make exceptions, it will never end. What is to stop a military wife from abandoning her children so her husband can get out of active duty?

Yeah what I meant is that The US Military dont have taxes taken off their paycheck while they are deployed. At least my ex did not have to when he was in Iraq, so they save some money. He was Army though. I dont know about other branches.

I got out of the Navy in 1992, just after Desert Storm. While I was deployed to Desert Shield/Storm I received hazardous duty pay. THAT pay was not taxed. As for the rest, if it was called pay it was taxed. If it was called allowance it was not.
