Are some liberals really idiots?

I'm a Libertarian more than anything, but liberals surprise me more than any other group. If you tell them, "Hey, we don't want to try enemy combatants in civilian courts" they automatically assume that means you want to torture them. You tell them repeatedly you do want to give them a trial - but just with a military tribunal, but they keep saying "if you can't try them in civilian courts, that means you want to stick them in a gulag and torture them" or some other extreme thing.

Or, you discuss health care with them, you say you don't want Obamacare because it's going to raise the national debt and not bring down costs, and they assume that means you hate poor people and love evil insurance companies and that you want the status quo. When you point out that no, you want reform, just not Obamacare, they can't seem to grasp that concept.

It's like they don't seem to get that intelligent, thoughtful people could have alternative approaches to problems besides their approaches.

I am sure some liberals could give us the names of lots of mean conservatives, too... but I've mostly seen this with liberals. And no, I don't think all liberals are idiots, just the ones who make assumptions and refuse to understand that there are nuances, not everything is black and white.

Update: November 20, 2009.
sorry I ran out of stars... I wanted to give out more than 3.

And not all of us are all or nothing right or left. But many are...and unless you fall in some kind of pigeon hole, your whole outlook is condemned.

I support capital punishment (in some cases), I advocate enforcing existing gun laws and not more restrictions for law abiding gun owners, I believe in free market economics...IF all are playing on an even field (which in international economies is almost never the case)...but I am branded a liberal because I support a woman's right to make her own reproductive choices...and happen to think that a government sponsored alternative to private insurance, while doing little to lower health care costs, would bring about more competition among the health insurance industry.

I also believe that successful democracies are based upon the abilities of all parties to make concessions and build consensus. If Americans are unwilling to find common ground upon which to stand and take the attitude of all or nothing I described above...our Republic is indeed in great peril.

There are those on both extremes who do the knee jerk thing on issues. I seem to notice, though, a lot more of the right striking out with venom and without thought on the hot button issues.

The ones that I find the most humorous, are the ones on this site who abhor the Afghan war because of all the fatalities, but than laugh at the Swine flu as if its fatalities are a joke, than on top of that the hat trick is they want Freeeeeeeeeeee Health care.

It's a lot of selective Hypocritical bull shit based on kissing ass, and trying to appear informed and intelligent.

If any party shoves things into "black and white" boxes, it's the Republican party.
And you CLAIM to be a Liberarian, but all I've ever seen you do is liberal bash on here.
Which is why I can't take you seriously.

Stupid people are stupid people regardless of their political affiliation. But by that same right, conservatives have adopted a news angle that favors propaganda for political purposes over real truth. Given that environment, it's easy to give "5 word" political slogans as a means of argument. I don't do it but the stupid people do.

I tend to libertarian ideals too. And yes, I've come to believe that modern "liberalism" is a mental disorder, irrational, delusional, and emotional.

I must be really out there. I dont' believe enemy combatants should be tried at all. They are doing the job of their army and maybe they should be returned to their country of origin or to the country and ideology they align themselves with. Yes, I will accept free passage to some Neutral country like Sweden! LOL
